Whimsical Garden Wedding Design with Colorful Florals and Butterfly Details

Designed and planned by Rocket Science Events, this colorful Sunfish Lake private home wedding was a one-of-a-kind whimsical garden party with thoughtful details.

Devin’s vision for her wedding was simple: all the colors and all the flowers! And that’s exactly what she got… and then some.

Hosted at a private home on Sunfish Lake in Minnesota, Devin & Stephen’s wedding leaned fully into romance and whimsy, with layers of florals, textures, saturated and soft colors, and personal moments. Butterflies and hummingbirds were woven into the design as a quiet nod to Devin’s grandmother, which made everything feel a little more meaningful.

The wedding ceremony took place overlooking the lake, with a non-traditional chuppah designed to feel like it belonged right there in the landscape. Tall trees towered as the four corners of the chuppah. The branches curved inward just enough to create a natural canopy, and the floral felt like it had grown up around it. Devin’s nephew stole the show by “driving” down the aisle in style.

After the ceremony, guests made their way to the pool for cocktail hour, where we kept things relaxed. Great food was a big priority for their wedding day, with a fully nut-free, nightshade-free, and gluten-free menu that didn’t sacrifice flavor. Drinks were flowing, people were mingling, and it set the tone for the rest of the night.

The wedding reception’s clear-top tent was where things really came to life. Their wedding guests entered through a larger-than-life floral and butterfly moment (because… obviously!), and inside felt like stepping into a colorful secret garden that had taken over the space. This design element was not only beautiful but functional because it was the seating chart! Guests found their name and table assignment on the oversized paper butterflies perched on the flowers and “flying” around. Hundreds of paper butterflies soared to the top of the tent.

For the tent’s design, we went for an eclectic Anthropolgie look, mixing up the table shapes and wares. Mismatched colored water glasses paired perfectly with the cobalt blue flatware and lavender napkin. The menus - which doubled as place cards - featured the butterfly and hummingbird motif, and each design signified the meal choice.

Overhead, florals cascaded across the space and twinkle lights kicked in as the sun went down. It was one of those nights where everything just felt effortless, beautiful, and fun.

After dinner guests hit the dance floor and danced the night away on a beautiful dance floor under orange velvet pendant lights. The band kept the energy up all night long, and guests refueled with late night snacks of candy, popcorn, and corn dogs (yes, gluten free!).

There were so many small moments woven throughout Devin and Stephen’s wedding design, from the butterfly details to the signature drinks named after their beloved cat Karl, that gave guests something new to notice all night long.
